Pearson Yachts Christens the True North 38

Warren, RI - (September 25, 2001) - More than 300 people gathered at the East Passage Yachting Center in Portsmouth, Rhode Island on September 22nd for the christening of the Pearson True North 38. The True North 38 represents the first launch by the reborn Pearson Yachts, a division of TPI Composites. TPI currently builds the line of J Boats and Alerion Express sailboats.

But the true star of the day was the stunning True North 38, designed to offer yachtsmen an affordable, dependable and, above all, seaworthy craft. "During sea trials we punched through some nasty seas on our way to Block Island. The 38 was dry and solid," says Mark Pearson, General Manager, Marine Division. Mark's father, Everett Pearson, often credited with starting the fiberglass production boat industry 40 years ago, and long time associate Duarte Da Silva, each broke a bottle of bubbly across the new lady's bow. Everett took the time to reminisce about past christenings during his formidable career and to pay tribute to Bill Shaw, former General Manager and designer of the majority of the sailboats built by Pearson.

The vessel's systems are designed to be simple and easy to maintain. The exterior is void of high maintenance bright work, so a quick washdown after a cruise is all it takes to keep the boat looking new. Pearson has provided space not only for a tender, but for kayaks as well, illustrating her SUV focus. Wide double transom doors allow the easy launching of the 10-foot inflatable dinghy with outboard motor and, when open, provide a sweeping view of
the harbor. "We were relaxing on our deck chairs with both doors open, and you just felt more connected to the water," comments Mike Hadjinian, CEO/President of TPI Composites.

The aft end of the pilothouse is open, providing the feeling of a much larger yacht. A fully-equipped galley is to starboard and the convertible dinette is on the port side. The helm station allows the installation of a variety of electronics, and the large side and front windows help provide a 360-degree line of sight. A large V-berth and head with shower provide comfortable accommodations for two.

Hull number one will cruise throughout New England before making its way south in October. Pearson is scheduling demo rides throughout the trip. Hull number two will launch in October. Both yachts will be in Key West, Florida for Yachting Key West Race Week in January as the "Official Race Committee Boat" of the event.
